Uttar Pradesh: Rain and Hail Alert for February 18-19; Mild Cold Continues

Varanasi: The cold wave in Uttar Pradesh is gradually subsiding, with only mild chills felt during mornings and nights, while sunny days prevail. However, the Meteorological Department has issued a rain and hail alert for the state on February 18 and 19, warning of deteriorating weather conditions.

Rain Expected in Western Districts

Rainfall is forecast in 13 districts across western Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, accompanied by the possibility of lightning and hail in some areas.

On Tuesday, the hottest districts recorded included Banda with 31.6°C, Hamirpur at 31.2°C, and Prayagraj at 31°C. The lowest minimum temperature of 15.4°C was recorded in Etawah.

Crop Damage Warning

The Meteorological Department has cautioned farmers about the potential damage to wheat and mustard crops due to rain and strong winds. Such conditions could cause crops to fall, weakening the grains and affecting yields. Farmers are advised to avoid storing harvested crops in open spaces.

Weather Changes in Neighboring Regions

Nearby Rajasthan experienced rain and hail in several districts including Jaipur, Alwar, and Tonk, due to the influence of a Western Disturbance. The drop in temperature has increased the coolness in the air.

Meanwhile, five districts of Uttarakhand — Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh — are expected to receive rain and snowfall on February 18. Snowfall is likely in areas above 3300 meters altitude.

Rain from Rajasthan may also spread to parts of Uttar Pradesh by afternoon or evening.

Light Drizzle Expected

Light drizzle is anticipated in several districts including Hathras, Mathura, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Banda, Lalitpur, and Jhansi around February 18.

Seasonal Overview

This winter, Uttar Pradesh experienced milder cold compared to previous years, with average temperatures above normal and a 36 percent decrease in rainfall between January 1 and February 11. The activity of western disturbances was comparatively low, leading to less winter rainfall.

The cold is now entering its final phase, with temperatures expected to rise gradually in the coming days. The next two to three weeks will see mild cold in the mornings and nights, with warmer afternoons typical of the spring season.
