Katra, Jammu and Kashmir: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has announced the temporary suspension of the Vaishno Devi Yatra due to inclement weather conditions affecting the region. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and the risk of landslides have prompted authorities to halt pilgrim movement on key routes, including the Himkoti track between Adhkuwari and Bhawan, to ensure devotee safety.
IMD Issues Warning
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Katra is experiencing “thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall,” with warnings of potential flash floods and landslides.
The decision to suspend the yatra follows reports of a cloudburst in nearby Kathua district, which triggered landslides and claimed at least seven lives. Rescue operations are underway, supported by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration.
The SMVDSB has closed the Himkoti track and suspended battery-operated vehicle services, advising pilgrims to use the traditional route between Adhkuwari and Sanjhichhat, which remains open.
Helicopter Services Halted
Helicopter services to the shrine have also been halted due to poor visibility and adverse weather. Pilgrims are urged to stay updated through official advisories and cooperate with on-ground staff.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured full support from the central government, stating, “Relief and rescue operations are being carried out, and we stand firmly behind the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” The Shrine Board emphasized that the suspension is a precautionary measure to prioritize pilgrim safety amid the challenging conditions.
