Pehowa: The Arora family of Sikandara Colony in Pehowa was looking forward to a joyous Diwali this year as 34-year-old Vicky Arora, who had been living in the US for around 12 years, was preparing to return home.
The family was also making plans for his marriage. His father, Kashmiri Lal, wanted to see his son dressed as a groom in a traditional sehra. Relatives were discussing a suitable match and making plans for the wedding.
However, their happiness turned into grief when Vicky’s body arrived home in a coffin 15 days after his death in a road accident in Ohio, USA.
Family members broke down as the coffin was brought into the house. The home that had been filled with discussions about Diwali celebrations and wedding preparations was suddenly filled with mourning.
Vicky was preparing to return home after 12 years
Vicky’s uncle Rajkumar said he had gone to the US around 12 years ago and was expected to return home around Diwali in November.
The family was particularly excited about his return because they were also planning his marriage. His elder brother, Kashmiri Lal, had been looking for a suitable match for him.
According to the family, discussions about the wedding had become a regular part of their conversations. They had hoped that after Vicky’s return, the marriage alliance would be finalised and preparations would begin.
But those plans were shattered by the news of his death.
Vicky died in Ohio road accident
Vicky died in a road accident in Ohio on the night of September 17-18.
According to the family, Vicky was driving a trailer truck carrying cargo on a highway when another trailer allegedly came from the opposite direction on the wrong side of the road.
While attempting to avoid a collision, Vicky’s trailer crashed into a concrete barrier. He was thrown from the trailer’s window and fell around 20 feet onto railway tracks below. He died instantly after suffering fatal injuries.
Vicky’s roommate, Happy, informed the family about the accident. His relatives also contacted his other friends in the US to confirm the news.
Friends raise ₹20 lakh to bring body home
After Vicky’s death, the family faced the difficult process of bringing his body back to India.
His body remained in the US for around 15 days as the family dealt with the necessary procedures and expenses involved in repatriation.
Vicky’s roommate Happy launched a fundraising campaign in his name. Friends, acquaintances and others contributed to the campaign, raising around ₹20 lakh to cover the repatriation and other necessary expenses.
His body was subsequently brought back to India.
On Sunday, his brother Sonu Arora performed Vicky’s final rites. Relatives, friends and local residents gathered at Swargdham in Pehowa to bid him a final farewell.
Father’s dream of seeing son as groom remains unfulfilled
Vicky’s mother, Rajrani, had died around three years ago. He is survived by his father, Kashmiri Lal, and brother Sonu.
His family had been eagerly waiting for his return after 12 years abroad, hoping to celebrate Diwali with him and begin preparations for his wedding.
Instead, the son they had hoped to welcome home as a groom returned in a coffin.
