New Delhi: Vietnamese Foreign Affairs Minister Le Hoai Trung arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, being hosted by India under its 2026 chairmanship on September 12-13.
His arrival comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung in New Delhi on the sidelines of the summit.
Vietnam Among BRICS Partner Countries
Vietnam is among the 10 BRICS partner countries. The 2026 BRICS Summit is being held under India’s chairship with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Development, sustainability and innovation are among the key areas of focus during India’s presidency.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Vietnam share an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with cooperation spanning defence and security, fintech, critical minerals and other emerging areas. The two countries also continue to cooperate closely on multilateral platforms.
Vietnamese broadcaster Voice of Vietnam reported that Hanoi views the summit as an opportunity to further consolidate and deepen its relations with India, while also strengthening ties with BRICS members and partner countries.
Vietnam To Present Vision On Global Challenges
Prime Minister Le Minh Hung is expected to share Vietnam’s vision and proposals on international cooperation, economic growth, sustainable development and addressing global challenges.
Earlier in May, Vietnamese President To Lam paid a State Visit to India, during which the two countries agreed to elevate bilateral ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, guided by the principles of “shared vision, strategic convergence, substantive cooperation”. The move was aimed at translating longstanding goodwill between the two countries into tangible outcomes.
India’s BRICS chairship comes amid global economic fragmentation, technological disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, climate change and resource pressures. New Delhi has said its 2026 chairship is focused on translating the group’s expanded representation into meaningful cooperation and tangible outcomes, while building consensus among its diverse members and strengthening existing mechanisms.
BRICS currently comprises 11 countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE. It also has 10 partner countries — Nigeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
