Two Killed, Three Critically Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Villupuram Railway Overpass

Chennai: Two people were killed and three others sustained critical injuries in a chain-reaction road accident involving a motorcycle, a luxury bus, a car and a tempo van on the Aiyyur Agaram railway overpass in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district on Tuesday, police said.

The accident occurred after a motorcycle reportedly went out of control while crossing the railway overpass, triggering a series of collisions involving four vehicles.

Motorcycle Collision Triggered Chain-Reaction Crash

According to the police, the motorcycle rider is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the opposite lane and collide head-on with an oncoming luxury bus.

The bus driver applied the brakes abruptly to avoid further impact, but a car and a tempo van travelling behind could not stop in time, resulting in a chain-reaction crash. The collision left multiple vehicles badly damaged, with several occupants trapped inside.

Two Dead, Three Undergoing Treatment

The motorcycle rider, identified as Boopathy, a resident of Narasingapuram in Villupuram district, died on the spot.

Another victim, John Anbazhagan (55) from Mudichur in Chennai, who was travelling in the car, also succumbed to his injuries at the accident site.

Three injured persons Lazar, Solomon and car driver Balaji were rescued and rushed to the Villupuram Government General Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Police Launch Investigation

Police personnel, assisted by local residents, carried out rescue operations and cleared the trapped occupants from the damaged vehicles before emergency medical teams arrived.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the railway overpass for several hours. Traffic was restored only after cranes removed the damaged vehicles from the road.

Villupuram police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials are examining eyewitness accounts and other evidence to determine the exact cause of the fatal accident.
