Visakhapatnam: Two fishermen were injured while five others had a narrow escape after a fishing boat overturned near Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred after the boat encountered rough sea conditions, causing it to capsize while the seven fishermen were heading out for fishing.
Marine Police Rescue Seven Fishermen
According to police, the overturned boat trapped the fishermen underneath. They managed to push the vessel aside and swim to nearby boulders before being rescued by the marine police.
Two fishermen, identified as Thatha Rao and Akash, sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to King George Hospital for treatment.
Boat and Fishing Equipment Destroyed
The affected fishermen said the boat, valued at around βΉ2.5 lakh, was completely damaged in the accident. They also lost fishing equipment worth nearly βΉ2 lakh.
Appealing to the state government, the fishermen sought financial assistance to rebuild their livelihood following the loss.
Incident Comes Days After Deadly Boat Tragedy
The latest mishap comes less than two weeks after a major fishing boat tragedy off the Visakhapatnam coast, in which six fishermen lost their lives.
The mechanised fishing vessel carrying seven fishermen had capsized about 10 nautical miles off the Gangavaram coast on July 4 while returning from a fishing trip. One fisherman was rescued by a merchant vessel, while the remaining six were presumed dead after an extensive search operation by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard was called off.
The Andhra Pradesh government later announced an ex gratia of βΉ10 lakh each for the families of the deceased fishermen.
