Vizag Steel Plant Blast: 8 Workers Killed After Molten Iron Spill, Rescue Ops Underway

Visakhapatnam: At least eight workers were killed and several others seriously injured in a major industrial accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday. The accident occurred when molten steel spilled during a lifting operation at the plant.

The accident occurred in the Steel Melting Shop (SMS)-2 and STC-3 units when a large quantity of molten steel suddenly spilled. Workers present at the scene were struck by the extremely hot metal, killing several on the spot and severely burning others.

The accident caused panic throughout the plant. Emergency rescue teams and security personnel rushed to the scene immediately. The injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals, where many are undergoing treatment. Officials fear the death toll may rise given the condition of the seriously injured workers.

The administration has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. It is being investigated whether the accident was caused by a technical fault, equipment failure, or operational error. Plant management is also assessing the damage.

According to officials, five bodies were recovered in the initial stages, while rescue operations continued. Police stated that the temperature of the molten iron involved in the accident was approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius, making relief and rescue operations extremely challenging.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the accident and reviewed the situation with senior officials. He directed the concerned departments to expedite rescue and relief operations, provide better medical care to the injured, and provide all possible assistance to the affected families.
