Waris Punjab De names Hindu leader murderer Sandeep Sunny for Tarn Taran by election

Chandigarh: A fresh controversy erupted in Punjab’s political landscape after Tarsem Singh, father of incarcerated Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, publicly announced that Waris Punjab De (WPD) would back Sandeep Sunny — an accused in the high-profile murder of Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri — or a member of his family if they contest the upcoming Tarn Taran by-election.

The announcement, made on Sunday, has drawn sharp reactions from political parties, civil society, and law enforcement officials. Critics argue that political support to a murder-accused individual sends a dangerous message and undermines the rule of law. Sunny is not only accused in the Suri murder case but was also involved in jail clashes with former Punjab Police personnel lodged in Patiala Jail.

Later that evening, Tarsem Singh visited Sunny’s family to reaffirm Waris Punjab De’s support, further intensifying the debate. During his remarks, he also slammed the Central Government for denying parole to his son, MP Amritpal Singh, claiming that the decision prevents him from serving his constituents effectively. Opposition parties, including the Congress and BJP, have condemned the move, with several leaders questioning the moral compass of WPD and calling for the Election Commission to intervene.
