Water dispute in Hansi’s Chanaut village: FIR registered against 1,500 people

Following a late-night confrontation between the police administration and villagers in Chanaut (Hansi) over a ‘T-connection,’ the police have registered a case against six named individuals—including the village Sarpanch—and 1,500 unidentified persons.

The case was filed based on a complaint by the Executive Engineer (XEN) of the Public Health Department, stating that two police personnel were injured due to stone-pelting by agitators during the incident.

This marks the fourth FIR registered against the villagers amidst the ongoing protest for water supply in Chanaut, which has been continuing for 39 days. Just two days prior, the Public Health Department’s XEN had lodged a case regarding the installation of the T-connection itself.

In the current complaint, XEN Sanjeev Tyagi explained that a DI pipeline was being laid from the Bhakra Canal to supply water to Hansi city under the ‘Amrut Yojana’ (AMRUT scheme); this pipeline had already been laid from Hansi city up to the Kharkadi turn in Chanaut village.

Villagers had installed an unauthorized T-connection at the Kharkadi turn in Chanaut on June 20 without departmental permission. A Duty Magistrate had been appointed, following orders from the Deputy Commissioner (DC), to oversee the removal of this connection. On Monday night, the official visited the site at the Kharkadi turn in Chanaut alongside DC Rahul Narwal, SP Vinod Kumar, SDM Rajesh Koth, Vikas Yadav, and a police force to remove the illegal T-connection.
