Punjab: Weather changes in Jalandhar due to rain; Storm and rain warning issued for 8 districts

Rainfall this morning brought a change in the weather in Jalandhar, Punjab, accompanied by a drop in temperature. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in eight districts today (June 19).

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds blowing at 40–50 km/h, and light to moderate rainfall are expected in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, and Mansa.

However, Chandigarh will see partly cloudy skies. The maximum temperature rose by 1.2 degrees on Thursday compared to Wednesday, bringing it close to normal levels.

The highest temperature was recorded in Bathinda at 42.2°C, while Chandigarh recorded 39.2°C. Conditions conducive to thunderstorms and rain are likely to persist until June 22.

Rise in Electricity Demand
Electricity demand in Punjab has surged alongside the rising heat. It peaked at 13,290 MW in the evening—specifically at 7:45 PM—before beginning to decline. The state is generating 4,358 MW of power from its own plants, while approximately 8,800 MW is being procured from the central grid.

Rain Expected Until June 22
Surender Paul, Director of the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, stated that weather activity in Punjab remains heightened due to a Western Disturbance and a cyclonic system over southern Punjab. Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places until June 22. During this period, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h are expected.

June 20: An alert for rain, thunderstorms, and lightning has been issued for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, and Sri Muktsar Sahib in Punjab.

June 21: Thunderstorms and rain are likely in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Mohali.

June 22: Rain and thunderstorms are likely in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, and Mansa.
