West Bengal: Mahua Moitra faces massive protest; shown black flags, pelted with eggs

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra faced protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Wednesday. The incident occurred in Palashi, where she had arrived to attend a meeting regarding preparations for the ‘July 21 Martyrs’ Day’ event. During the incident, BJP workers gathered outside the restaurant to protest and threw eggs at her.

What did Mahua Moitra say after sharing the video?
Moitra alleged that BJP workers attacked her office in Krishnanagar by throwing eggs and vegetables. She shared a video on the social media platform X showing the crowd throwing eggs at her. She wrote, “I am currently being attacked by BJP goons, and the West Bengal Police is watching.”

She said, “Look at what is happening. This is a BJP mob right in front of the police. I have been standing here for the past hour. I have called the Director General of Police (DGP) and everyone else, but the police are just sitting and watching. The CRPF is watching too.”

Mahua Moitra further added, “This is my constituency. I am the MP here. I am in my office. I will not leave this place. Please look at their faces. Tomorrow, the West Bengal government will deny this. No police action will be taken. No court will take cognizance. The CRPF is watching.”

Throwing eggs is not BJP’s culture: Samik Bhattacharya
Meanwhile, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya stated that throwing eggs is not part of the BJP’s culture. Commenting on the politics of egg-throwing, he remarked that this is not the BJP’s model. He appealed to party workers to refrain from activities that could tarnish the party’s image across the country.

An attempt to undermine the democratic system: Biman Banerjee
TMC MLA Biman Banerjee said, “If such an incident occurs, police intervention is essential. When an MP visits their constituency to hold a meeting, obstructing them in this manner is an attempt to undermine our democratic system. It is crucial for the police to take immediate action.” I will urge the police to go there and, at the very least, normalize the situation that has developed.
