Major reshuffle in Bengal Police: 33 IPS officers transferred; Natarajan R Babu new intelligence chief

Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Tuesday carried out a major reshuffle in the state police administration, transferring 33 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and appointing Natarajan R. Babu as the new head of the state’s intelligence wing.

According to an official notification issued from the state secretariat, Nabanna, Natarajan R. Babu, who was serving as the Director General of Correctional Services, has been appointed as the Additional Director General (ADG), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), overseeing the state’s intelligence wing.

Supratim Sarkar Among Key Transfers

One of the most significant changes is the transfer of Supratim Sarkar, who has been moved from the post of ADG, CID to ADG, Telecommunications.

Sarkar had earlier served as the Kolkata Police Commissioner before being shifted following the announcement of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He later served as a police observer for Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Several Senior IPS Officers Get New Responsibilities

As part of the reshuffle, K. Jayaraman has been transferred from ADG, North Bengal Region, to Director, Directorate of Economic Offences.

Vishal Garg has been posted as ADG, Intelligence Branch (IB) after serving as ADG, Western Zone.

Praveen Kumar Tripathi, who was serving as Inspector General (IG), Special Task Force (STF), has been transferred as IG, Home Guards.

Meanwhile, Tripurari Atharv has been shifted from the post of Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar, and appointed ADG, Traffic and Road Safety.

Rathod Amitkumar Bharat has been appointed the new Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar.

The government has also transferred officers at the district level, including changes in the Baruipur Police District, where Atish Biswas has replaced Pinaki Dutta as Additional Superintendent of Police (Zonal).

Reshuffle Comes Amid Administrative Review

The reshuffle comes amid administrative scrutiny following the recent rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur, after questions were raised over the police response to the incident.

The latest transfers are part of a wider administrative exercise aimed at strengthening policing and reorganising key departments across the state.
