White House Slams Nobel Committee After Venezuela’s María Corina Machado Wins 2025 Peace Prize

Washington: After the Nobel Peace Prize Committee announced Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado as the 2025 laureate, the White House lashed out in anger on Friday, accusing the panel of political bias and overlooking U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace efforts.

In a statement posted on X, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said:
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

Cheung further accused the Nobel Committee of partisanship, adding: “Once again, the Nobel Committee has proved they place politics over peace.”

Machado Hailed as Symbol of Democratic Struggle

The Nobel Committee praised Machado for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
A longtime critic of Venezuela’s authoritarian regime, Machado has faced threats, bans, and political persecution. Her recognition, observers noted, highlights global support for democratic values amid rising authoritarianism.

Trump’s Peace Record Under Scrutiny

Trump and his allies had campaigned vigorously for his Nobel candidacy, citing the 2020 Abraham Accords and, more recently, his announcement of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. However, most of his 2025 nominations — including those from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Pakistan’s government — were submitted after the February 1 deadline, rendering him ineligible.

Critics also point out that Trump’s peace efforts remain contested. His Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to end the Ukraine war, while questions persist over the sustainability of the Gaza ceasefire.

Nobel Committee Stands Firm

Despite U.S. criticism, the Nobel Committee defended its choice, stressing that Machado embodied Alfred Nobel’s vision of honoring individuals who advance peace and justice at great personal risk.
