So, Who Is Peter Navarro?

Peter Navarro is an economist and one of Donald Trump’s long-time trade advisers. He holds a PhD in economics from Harvard University and is a professor emeritus of economics and public policy at the University of California, Irvine.

Navarro was an economic and trade adviser during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and joined the White House when Trump first took office. He later served as Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy and became known for his hardline views on China, global trade and tariffs. Trump brought him back for his second administration as Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing.

His basic economic approach is simple: he believes the US should use tariffs and tougher trade policies to protect American manufacturing, jobs and industries.

A Long History of Supporting Tariffs

Navarro has been one of the strongest supporters of Trump’s protectionist trade agenda. During Trump’s first term, he was a major advocate of tougher action against China and supported higher tariffs on Chinese imports.
