Will India and Pakistan Clash Again in 2026?

New Delhi: A recent report by a US think-tank has said there is a “moderate likelihood” of renewed conflict between India and Pakistan in 2026.

This comes after the two countries had a serious military confrontation earlier this year.

    What the Report Says

The report, titled “Conflicts to Watch in 2026”, was compiled by the Center for Preventive Action (CPA) under the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). It does not predict war, but identifies conflicts that could happen and affect global stability. The report ranked conflicts by likelihood and impact on US interests, and India–Pakistan clashes were placed in Tier II, meaning moderate risk. The report highlights that renewed conflict could be triggered by terrorist attacks and cross-border tensions.

    Background: Tensions in 2025

Tensions rose sharply earlier this year after a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. India blamed Pakistan-based groups for the attack. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7–8, striking what it said were terrorist camps and infrastructure across the border.

About 24 terror camps were hit, over 100 militants were killed, and Pakistani airbases including Nur Khan in Rawalpindi were targeted.

India used the S-400 air defence system to intercept Pakistani missiles. Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile strikes, but India said there were no major casualties or damage.

The standoff lasted four days and ended after military-level talks between the two countries. India stated the decision to stop operations was taken independently, without outside mediation.

    India’s New Approach

After Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear that India will not tolerate cross-border terrorism and will not accept nuclear threats or blackmail. This shows India is ready to use calibrated military action in response to future attacks without triggering full-scale war.

    What Could Happen in 2026?

According to the CFR report, another conflict could happen if terrorist attacks escalate. The potential clash is not certain, but the risk is considered moderate. Any escalation could have regional consequences but is expected to have moderate impact on US interests.

    Other Regional Tensions

The report also mentions a moderate risk of conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, driven by violence from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistan accuses the Taliban in Afghanistan of sheltering TTP leaders. Pakistan has carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan targeting TTP leaders, and sporadic clashes continue along the Durand Line, the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

India and Pakistan may face tensions in 2026, especially if terrorism rises. Operation Sindoor in 2025 showed that India is willing to respond militarily to terror threats. While the risk exists, a full-scale war is not predicted, but both countries remain on high alert. Other regional conflicts, like Pakistan–Afghanistan, could also add to instability in South Asia. In short, the risk of clashes is real, but careful military strategies and diplomacy currently help prevent a major war.
