Bharatpur: On Thursday morning, around 8:00 AM, a leopard attacked a woman who was working in a field within the Rupwas police station area of Bharatpur.
The leopard clamped its jaws around the neck of the woman—who was harvesting wheat at the time—and attempted to drag her away. However, the woman’s life was saved thanks to the commotion raised by nearby villagers.
The woman’s son, Virendra—a resident of Tejpur village—recounted, “My mother, Chandravati (52), had gone to the field in the morning to harvest wheat. Other farmers were also working in their respective fields nearby.”
Suddenly, a leopard that had been lying in ambush amidst the crops and bushes in the field emerged abruptly and pounced on the woman, giving her no chance to react.
Chandravati stated, “My son Shrikant and I were harvesting wheat when, all of a sudden, a leopard leaped onto me. It clamped its jaws around my neck and began dragging me away. The attack was so swift and forceful that I lost my balance and collapsed to the ground.”
She continued, “It clawed at my face and mouth and attempted to pin me down. Breathing became difficult, and my vision began to fade. I struggled with all my might; just then, my son began to scream at the top of his lungs. Hearing the commotion, the leopard let go of me and fled. Had it taken just a few seconds longer, I likely would not have survived.”
Hospitalized in Critical Condition
Immediately following the incident, villagers rushed the injured Chandravati to the Rupwas Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment for injuries to her neck and hands.
The woman sustained severe injuries across her body, including a deep wound to her neck, bite marks on her face, and claw marks on her hands.
Fields Searched Using Drones; No Confirmation of Leopard Presence
Shushpendra Singh Parmar, a forester with the Forest Department, stated that upon receiving information about the incident, a team immediately reached the site and conducted a search operation across the fields using drones.
However, no clear signs of any wild animal activity have been detected so far. It also remains unclear whether the attack was carried out by a leopard or by another wild animal.
