Women Wrestlers Sexual Harassment Case: Delhi court acquits Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has delivered a major verdict in the case regarding the alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers. The court has acquitted former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Vinod Tomar has also been acquitted alongside him.

Upon arriving at the Rouse Avenue Court before the verdict, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh stated, “I will only heed what the court says. It is not in my hands.”

The Case Background
Allegations of sexual harassment leveled by female wrestlers against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had sent shockwaves through the sports world. The matter came to light in January 2023 when several top female wrestlers staged a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s removal from his post.

The wrestlers alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had sexually harassed several female athletes by misusing his position. The allegations also implicated certain coaches associated with the Wrestling Federation of India. Female athletes raised their voices and sought justice regarding this serious matter.

Given the gravity of the situation, the Ministry of Sports sought an explanation from the Wrestling Federation of India. Subsequently, a committee was constituted to investigate the matter. During the course of the investigation, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had to step down from his post, and the Wrestling Federation’s office was relocated from his residence.
