Women’s Commission Seeks Answers on Doctor’s Reinstatement in Kurukshetra Minor Rape Case

Kurukshetra: The re-appointment of retired doctor Shailendra Sharma ‘Shaili’ who was arrested on charges of raping a 15-year-old minor at the Loknayak Jaiprakash (LNJP) Civil Hospital in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district has now come under intense scrutiny. Adopting a strict stance on the matter, the Haryana State Commission for Women has sought an explanation from the Health Department within three days.

The Women’s Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Health Services, Haryana, inquiring under which specific rules and procedures a retired Senior Medical Officer was re-appointed as a doctor/consultant at the LNJP Hospital. The Commission has categorically stated that the matter is extremely grave, given that women and children visit hospitals to seek medical treatment.

    Patient Safety is a Priority

Therefore, it is imperative that every aspect related to patient safety falls within the scope of the investigation. The Women’s Commission has directed the Health Department to provide comprehensive responses to all queries accompanied by supporting documents within three days. The Commission also intends to ascertain whether established protocols and safety standards were adhered to during the doctor’s re-appointment process.

Past Cases May Also Be Investigated

Dr. Shailendra Sharma’s ‘Shaili’ past professional records may also come under scrutiny. The nature of the questions raised by the Women’s Commission clearly indicates that, at the departmental level, the investigation may extend beyond the current incident to encompass a thorough review of the doctor’s entire service history. The Commission has emphasized that the allegations are extremely serious and bear a direct nexus with patient safety; therefore, the matter must be addressed with immediate effect.

    Rape Committed on May 29

On May 29, a 15-year-old girl from a nearby village had visited the hospital accompanied by her father. Her father had been admitted to the hospital. During this time, the girl also complained of abdominal pain, following which she underwent an examination in the OPD. There, Dr. Shaili admitted her to the female ward.

It is alleged that, during this period, Dr. Shaili took the girl to the OPD and raped her multiple times. When the girl began bleeding, she was admitted to the emergency ward. Subsequently, the girl informed the senior doctors about the rape she had endured.

Police to produce accused in court today

Following these events, Dr. Shaili fled the hospital. On May 31, a case was registered against Dr. Shaili at the KUK Police Station under various sections of the POCSO Act. Subsequently, the Health Department terminated Dr. Shaili’s services. The police arrested him on June 1. The accused is scheduled to be produced in court today.
