No Women’s world cup matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Govt denies permission

Karnataka: Government in Karnataka on Tuesday denies permission to host ICC women world cup matches in November at Chinnaswamy Stadium, reports said.

Reports reaching The Savera Times said that the government cited the reason the venue is unsafe to host the large gathering by the judicial commission report on the June 4 stampede. For the unversed, 11 people lost their lives and over 50 were injured in the tragic stampede during RCB’s victory parade.

After the incident, a commission was set up to probe the reason for the stampede, and the stadium’s design and structure, including inadequate entry and exit points, poor connectivity to public transport, lack of queuing areas, insufficient emergency evacuation plans, and minimal parking space to host large-scale events, was one of the reasons that was highlighted in the report.

The Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA) expressed disappointment at the decision, saying that they successfully hosted over 750 matches and nearly 15 IPL seasons. The KCA said that they requested to host the matches without fans, but their calls went unanswered. The matches that were scheduled to take place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will now be played at different venues. This is not the first setback to the KCA as the venue was recently banned from hosting the Maharaja Trophy matches as well.

“Even our request to host matches without spectators was turned down,” a KSCA official said, noting that the June 4 event was privately organised, not a cricket match.’
