WORLD FOOD SAFETY AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY

World Food Safety Day is observed every year on 7 June to raise awareness about the importance of safe food and to encourage actions that help prevent foodborne diseases. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, and the first observance took place in 2019.

The day is jointly facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Food safety is a shared responsibility involving governments, farmers, food manufacturers, transporters, retailers, and consumers. Every year, millions of people around the world suffer from illnesses caused by contaminated food. Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances can lead to more than 200 different diseases. Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to foodborne illnesses.

The main objective of World Food Safety Day is to promote awareness about the importance of safe food at every stage of the food supply chain. From farming and processing to transportation, storage, cooking, and consumption, every step plays a vital role in ensuring that food remains safe and nutritious. Safe food not only protects human health but also supports economic growth, sustainable agriculture, and food security. Individuals can contribute to food safety by following simple hygiene practices.

Washing hands before preparing or eating food, cleaning fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cooking food at the correct temperature, storing food properly, and avoiding crosscontamination between raw and cooked food are essential habits. Consumers should also check expiry dates, purchase food from reliable sources, and maintain cleanliness in kitchens. Governments play a crucial role by enforcing food safety regulations, conducting regular inspections, and educating the public. Food businesses must follow quality standards, maintain hygiene during production and packaging, and ensure proper labeling.

Scientists and researchers also contribute by developing better methods to detect food contamination and improve food preservation techniques. World Food Safety Day also highlights the importance of international cooperation. As food is traded across countries, maintaining global food safety standards is necessary to protect consumers and promote fair trade. Organizations such as the FAO and WHO work closely with governments to strengthen food safety systems worldwide. The observance of this day reminds us that food safety is everyone’s responsibility. A small mistake in food handling can have serious consequences for health, while simple preventive measures can save lives.

By increasing awareness and encouraging responsible practices, World Food Safety Day helps build healthier communities and strengthens confidence in the food we eat. In conclusion, World Food Safety Day is an important global initiative that emphasizes the need for safe, nutritious, and hygienic food for all. It encourages individuals, businesses, and governments to work together to reduce foodborne diseases and ensure a healthier future. By adopting safe food practices in our daily lives, we can protect ourselves, our families, and society while contributing to a safer and more sustainable world.
