World Squash Federation mourns the passing of former chief Narayana Ramachandran

New Delhi: The World Squash Federation has mourned the passing of its former president and first honorary life member, Narayana Ramachandran. He passed away at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness.

Ramachandran’s last rites will be performed at the Besant Nagar crematorium in Chennai on Friday.

     Held key positions
Ramachandran served as president of the WSF from 2008 to 2016, becoming the first Indian to lead an international federation recognized by the IOC. He also served as president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from 2014 to 2017, during which the IOA was reinstated to the Olympics after a 14-month ban.

Contribution to the Global Development of Squash
World Squash President Zena Wooldridge said, “Rami’s dedication and contribution to squash, from the national to the global level, over the past 25 years has been remarkable. His legacy will live on forever.”

As President of the Asian Squash Federation (2001-2009), he played a key role in getting squash included as a major medal sport in the Asian Games. He also organized and supported several Asian Championships in India.

An Indelible Mark on Indian Sports
While serving as President of World Squash, Ramachandran twice led the effort to have squash included in the Olympics and was awarded the Olympic Order (Silver) by the International Olympic Committee in 2016.

He took squash to new heights in India and played a key role in establishing Chennai as the “Squash Capital.” His efforts led to the establishment of the India Squash Academy and the hosting of several World Championships between 2002 and 2025.

    Tributes continue
The Squash Rackets Federation of India also condoled his death, calling him a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of squash in India and the world.

Former IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta also expressed grief over his demise, saying he was a balanced, clear-thinking, and principled leader.

He said, “He provided stability and structure to the IOA during difficult times and handled every responsibility with fairness and dignity.”

He further said that his contribution to Indian sports will always be remembered and he will be remembered with deep respect for his work.
