New Delhi: The government on Tuesday granted X Corp. an additional 48 hours to submit a detailed report detailing the steps taken to address the issue of its Grok AI chatbot generating objectionable and sexually explicit content, a senior official told Hindustan Times.
Earlier, on Friday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had given the Elon Musk-owned platform 72 hours to respond to the misuse of Grok AI. Now, X has until January 7, 5 p.m. to submit its report.
MeitY expresses concern over serious lapses
On January 2, MeitY wrote a strong letter to X, highlighting alleged serious failures in addressing the creation and dissemination of obscene and sexually explicit content through Grok. The ministry warned that if the platform did not take necessary action, it could risk losing legal protection under Indian law.
The letter was addressed to Vinay Prakash, X’s India Chief Compliance Officer (CCO). It stated that some users were abusing “Grok AI” to share obscene and derogatory images and videos of women. This abuse was not limited to fake accounts, but even content uploaded by women themselves was being modified through AI.
Extension sought citing holidays
The additional 48-hour extension was granted because X informed MeitY that many of its employees were unavailable due to the Christmas and New Year holidays and they needed more time to respond.
According to officials, MeitY had discussed Grok’s political and religious content with the platform’s compliance team prior to the January 2 letter. However, these discussions did not pertain to obscene or sexual content, so the letter came as a surprise to X. A meeting scheduled for January 3 was also postponed at X’s request.
Action Taken Report and Legal Warning
MeitY has directed X to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR), which should include technical measures for Grok, the role of the CCO, action taken against violating users and content, and details of the mandatory crime reporting system.
The ministry warned that non-compliance could result in the revocation of Section 79 protections and “stringent legal action” against the platform, its officials, and users.
This letter follows a January 2 letter from Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, in which she reported the sexualized images of women being generated through Grok and sought government intervention.
Also, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said at an event that social media platforms have a major influence on society and must take responsibility for their content. He also said that a parliamentary standing committee has recommended stringent laws to ensure accountability of social media.
