Xi Jinping To Attend BRICS Summit In New Delhi On September 12-13, China Confirms

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.

The ministry said Xi will travel to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BRICS leaders’ summit.

Xi Jinping’s First India Visit In Nearly Seven Years

The visit will be Xi Jinping’s first trip to India in nearly seven years and comes as New Delhi and Beijing work to stabilise bilateral ties following the deadly 2020 Galwan clashes.

“At the invitation of Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in social media posts.

Earlier on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia-kun had declined to confirm whether Xi would travel to New Delhi when asked about his possible visit during a regular media briefing in Beijing.

Modi-Xi Bilateral Meeting Expected On BRICS Sidelines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping, who interacted briefly during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, are expected to hold detailed bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

India has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas for the continued development of bilateral relations.

    India-China Border Engagement Continues

The announcement comes amid renewed military and diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Following understandings reached between the Special Representatives of India and China in August 2025 and August 2026, along with subsequent discussions under the Working Mechanisms for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC), the first senior military commander-level flag meeting was held along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at Vacha on the Indian side in Arunachal Pradesh on September 6 and at Damai on the Chinese side on September 7.

On August 25, National Security Advisor (NSA) and India’s Special Representative for the India-China Boundary Question Ajit Doval highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border during the 25th Round of Special Representatives Talks in Beijing.

Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also China’s Special Representative, held comprehensive and candid discussions on the boundary issue and bilateral relations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides noted progress in implementing key understandings reached between Modi and Xi in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025.

The two sides also welcomed the steady resumption of people-to-people and cross-border exchanges, including the ongoing Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through three designated border trading passes.

The MEA said the two Special Representatives agreed to continue working towards a political settlement of the boundary question while keeping in mind the countries’ overall and long-term interests.
