Xi Jinping Calls For Stronger China-US Ties, Says ‘Let Us Nurture Beautiful Flowers Of Sino-US Friendship’

Washington: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for stronger China-US ties and urged both countries to work together to build a new chapter in their relations, saying, “Let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-US friendship.”

Addressing a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump, Xi thanked Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for their hospitality and the arrangements made for his visit.

Xi Says China-US Leaders Reached Common Understanding

Xi said his visit followed Trump’s invitation and recalled the US President’s visit to China in May. According to Xi, the two leaders had agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability.

“In May this year, President Trump paid a successful visit to China at my invitation. We agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability,” Xi said.

He noted that Trump had invited him to visit the United States during that trip and said the exchange of state visits by the two presidents in less than six months had marked an important moment in bilateral relations.

Xi said he and Trump had held “sincere and in-depth exchanges” and reached a common understanding on several issues. He said this had added new substance to the China-US relationship and provided new strategic guidance for bilateral ties.

Xi Calls For New Chapter In China-US Friendship

Xi said the friendship between the Chinese and American peoples was a cause with “great promise” and called for continued cooperation between the two countries.

“Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still. The friendship between the two peoples is a worthy cause that holds great promise. Let us join hands and move forward side by side. Together, let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-US friendship. Together, let us write a new chapter in our friendly relations,” he said.

Xi also extended greetings to Americans who support stronger bilateral relations and said the arrangements for his visit reflected “meticulous care and consideration in every detail.”

Trump Welcomes Xi At White House State Dinner

Trump also welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the White House for the state dinner.

During the dinner, Trump presented Xi with a bald eagle statue, describing the eagle as a national symbol of the United States and an embodiment of the “free and soaring spirit of America”.

Trump said the gift was made by an American artist and designed in collaboration with him and First Lady Melania Trump. He expressed hope that the statue would find a suitable place in Beijing.

Speaking about China-US relations, Trump said both leaders understood that the two countries represented different systems but that ties between their peoples continued.

“As the leaders of our two nations, President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure,” Trump said, adding that the two countries could continue building a relationship aimed at promoting prosperity and security for future generations.
