22-year-old student dies at Guwahati homestay; father alleges gang rape and murder

Guwahati: The death of a 22-year-old student at a homestay on the outskirts of Guwahati, Assam, has raised serious questions. The family alleges that she was gang-raped and then murdered. Police are conducting a preliminary investigation.

The student was found in critical condition at a homestay in the Garal area on Saturday. She was first taken to a local health center, from where she was referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Doctors there declared her dead.

Father claims daughter was severely beaten

The deceased’s father told the media that his daughter had injuries on her body and alleged that she was gang-raped before being murdered. He also claimed that she was tied with ropes.

According to the father, his daughter left home around 5 p.m. on Friday, saying she was going to have dinner with friends. Around 10 p.m., she called her mother and told her that she would stay with a friend at the university hostel because it was getting late.

The family says that around 2 a.m., the student called her mother and told her that she had been severely assaulted. The call was then disconnected. The family later claimed that she had pleaded for help, saying, “They will kill me.”

Boyfriend arrested, police investigating murder angle

Police have arrested the student’s 26-year-old alleged boyfriend, Asif Ali. According to reports, he had claimed the student’s death was a suicide, but the family has disbelieved this claim.

Guwahati West DCP Bolin Deori said the investigation is still in its initial stages and police are also looking into the case from a murder angle. Police are questioning the homestay owner, caretaker, and other staff.

The police have not yet conclusively proven the allegations of gang rape and murder made by the family. The investigation and forensic procedures are ongoing.
