Yellow alert for 2 days of cold wave and dense fog in Punjab; Cold day in 6 districts today

The cold winds from the mountains have intensified the chill in Punjab and Chandigarh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh, there is no relief from the cold expected today and tomorrow. A yellow alert has been issued for cold wave and dense fog. The museum tower at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh is shrouded in dense fog.

Meanwhile, dense fog is expected in 10 districts of Punjab, a cold wave in 5 districts, and cold day conditions in 6 districts. Dense fog is likely in some areas of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala.

A cold wave may prevail in some parts of Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa districts. Similarly, cold day conditions are expected in some areas of Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala.

However, the Punjab Meteorological Department says that this year the cold has been less intense compared to previous years. The lowest temperature recorded so far this year is 4.4 degrees Celsius in Bathinda. Cold day conditions were recorded in Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Patiala on Friday. Although the maximum temperature increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius due to sunshine during the day, it remained 3.6 degrees below normal.

This is how the weather is currently
According to the Meteorological Department, a weather system is currently present in the upper atmosphere over North Pakistan and the adjoining Punjab region. This system is at an altitude of approximately 3 to 4.5 kilometers, causing changes in the weather. A circulating wind system is also present over Haryana at an altitude of about 1.5 kilometers. Strong westerly winds are blowing at very high altitudes over North India, keeping the weather cold, and preventing the sun from coming out.

Nights have turned cold
The minimum temperature in Punjab and Chandigarh has been recorded between 4.4 °C and 7.6 °C. This means the nights have become quite cold. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh was 6.1 degrees, Amritsar 6.3 degrees, Ludhiana 6.2 degrees, Patiala 5.4 degrees, Pathankot 7.1 degrees, Bathinda 4.4 degrees, Pathankot 5.8 degrees, Gurdaspur 4.8 degrees, SBS Nagar 5.2 degrees, and Mansa 6.4 degrees. The maximum temperature, however, was recorded between 11 and 18 degrees Celsius.
