Yellow Alert for Heatwave in Punjab and Chandigarh; Temperature over 35°C in 21 Districts

Punjab and Chandigarh are currently experiencing intense heat. The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for a four-day heatwave, effective from Tuesday (April 21 to April 24). During this period, nights are also expected to remain warm in certain areas. Compared to Monday, a 0.1-degree rise has been recorded, pushing the mercury to 3.2 degrees above normal.

Temperatures in 21 districts are currently hovering above the 35-degree mark. The highest temperature recorded stands at 41 degrees. The Health Department has issued an advisory urging people to take precautions against the heat, offering tips ranging from dietary recommendations to general safety measures. Furthermore, special wards have been established in hospitals, and staff have been deployed on a 24-hour basis to handle heat-related cases.

Heatwave Forecast for 7 Districts

Heatwave-like conditions may develop in isolated pockets across seven districts of Punjab: Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, and Patiala. The sun is expected to be intense from morning hours, while the heatwave’s impact is projected to peak between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

Western Disturbance to Become Active from April 23

A Western Disturbance is currently positioned over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining regions, manifesting as an upper-air cyclonic circulation at an altitude of approximately 3.1 kilometers above sea level. Strong winds, with speeds reaching around 110 knots, are blowing down from the mountains. A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to begin impacting the Western Himalayan region starting April 23.

Temperatures Exceed 35 Degrees

Temperatures exceeding 35 degrees have been recorded in 21 districts of the state, resulting in the persistence of intense heat across the entirety of Punjab. Chandigarh recorded a temperature of 38.1 degrees. Specific temperature readings for other cities included 37.0 degrees in Jalandhar, 37.1 degrees in Amritsar, 39.4 degrees in Ludhiana, and 39.8 degrees in Patiala. A temperature of 37.2 degrees was recorded in Pathankot, while Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 41.0 degrees.

Temperatures of 38.0 degrees in Faridkot, 37.5 degrees in Gurdaspur, 36.7 degrees in SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), 40.9 degrees in Faridkot, 36.6 degrees in Fazilka, 36.5 degrees in Ferozepur, and 36.2 degrees in Hoshiarpur were recorded. Additionally, temperatures of 35.8 degrees in Malerkotla, 36.5 degrees in Kapurthala, 36.5 degrees in Pathankot, 37.4 degrees in Patiala, 36.5 degrees in Ropar, and 39.5 degrees at Bhakra Dam (Nangal) were recorded.
