Yellow alert issued for 6 days for dense fog in Punjab; Rain expected today

People in Punjab and Chandigarh will have to brace themselves for dense fog and biting cold for the next five days. Cold winds are blowing towards the plains due to snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog and cold day conditions until the 27th. Light rain is also expected in some areas today.

A cold day was recorded in Ludhiana, while dense fog was observed in Bathinda, Amritsar, Halwara, and Gurdaspur. Due to the snowfall in the hilly regions, the maximum temperature has increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature by 2 degrees Celsius. This is 4.6 degrees higher than normal. Gurdaspur was the coldest district, recording a minimum temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Department, a Western Disturbance is currently active, causing changes in the weather. Its effect is clearly visible on the weather in Northwest India. High-speed winds, known as jet streams, are blowing over Northwest India. Today, extremely cold conditions are expected in some parts of Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Bathinda, Ludhiana, and Mansa districts. Light rain is also possible in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur districts.

There will be no significant change in the minimum temperature for the next 48 hours. After that, the temperature in the state may drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Cloudy conditions and fog are expected on the highways

The Meteorological Department has advised people traveling on highways to be cautious for the next two days. On the 22nd, dense fog and cloudy conditions are expected on the Delhi-Ambala highway, while cloudy conditions will also prevail on the Ambala-Amritsar highway. On the 23rd, cloudy conditions are likely on the highway from Amritsar to Delhi.
