Yellow Alert for Storms and Rain Continues in Punjab Today; Temperature Drop recorded

The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh has undergone a change over the past few days. A decline of 0.9 degrees in the maximum temperature was recorded compared to Wednesday. It now stands 2.5 degrees below normal. Bathinda remained the hottest location, where a temperature of 39.3 degrees was recorded.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for today, Thursday, warning of strong winds and lightning strikes in certain areas. Winds are expected to blow at speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

There is a possibility of rain in some locations. No heatwave conditions are expected. No alerts have been issued for May 1st; however, similar weather conditions are expected to persist until May 5th.

According to the Meteorological Department, an alert for thunderstorms and strong winds is in effect today for four districts. These include Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Mohali. The number of districts with a rain forecast stands at 13, comprising Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali).

Drop in Temperature and Rain Recorded in Two Districts

Temperatures ranging between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius were recorded in 10 districts across the state, while temperatures remained below 35 degrees Celsius in 9 districts. Specifically, Amritsar recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees (a drop of 1.1 degrees); Faridkot recorded 35.5 degrees (a drop of 1.7 degrees); Fazilka recorded 35.4 degrees (a drop of 2.2 degrees); Ferozepur recorded 34.9 degrees (a drop of 0.6 degrees); and the Pathankot Agricultural Centre recorded 28.8 degrees Celsius (a drop of 4.1 degrees). Regarding rainfall, Pathankot recorded the highest precipitation at 3.5 mm, while a ‘trace’ amount of rain was recorded in Patiala. No rainfall was recorded in the other districts. According to the Meteorological Centre, a Western Disturbance is currently active in the vicinity of Pakistan and Kashmir. As a result of this influence, weather conditions have shifted across the state and surrounding regions. A low-pressure area and a cyclonic system have formed over Punjab, leading to cloudy skies, strong winds, thunderstorms, and rainfall.

A trough line has also established itself, extending from North Punjab to Southwest Rajasthan, thereby intensifying weather-related activities. From May 2nd onwards, a new Western Disturbance is set to impact the Western Himalayan region. Under its influence, weather conditions, including rainfall and strong winds, are likely to intensify once again in the coming days across Punjab and the neighboring areas.
