Youth arrested in theft case hangs himself at police station in Ludhiana

A young man in Ludhiana committed suicide by hanging himself inside a police station. According to the police, the deceased was arrested in a criminal case and brought to the station for questioning. He tore a piece of cloth to make a noose and hanged himself from an iron grill.

The deceased has been identified as Gurinder Singh (23), a resident of the village of Lalton. Following the incident, the police transported the body to the Civil Hospital, placed it in the mortuary, and informed the family. A postmortem will be conducted on Saturday after the family arrives.

Policemen were busy with other duties

According to reports, the police arrested Gurinder Singh late Friday evening and detained him at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (SBS Nagar) police station. The police personnel were busy with other duties for a while when the young man hanged himself.

When a police officer saw him, he immediately informed the station in-charge. Subsequently, the incident was reported to senior officials. At present, the police have declined to issue an official statement on the matter.

Arrested in Theft Case

Dugari police had registered a theft case against Gurinder Singh on September 13, 2025, under Section 305 of the IPC. Fearing arrest, he was absconding and constantly changing locations. After considerable effort, police apprehended him and detained him in the SBS Nagar police station lockup, where he committed suicide during interrogation.

While the exact reason behind the suicide is yet to be revealed, sources indicate that Gurinder Singh was experiencing mental stress and embarrassment following his arrest, leading him to take this extreme step.
