Zaheer Khan Named Chennai Super Kings Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2027, Replaces Stephen Fleming

Chennai: Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

CSK announced the appointment on social media, with the franchise welcoming Zaheer in a post that read: “Left Arm ‘Taking’ Over! Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings!”

Zaheer replaces former New Zealand cricketer Stephen Fleming, who had served as CSK’s head coach for 16 years and guided the franchise to five IPL titles.

Zaheer Khan Takes Over From Stephen Fleming

Fleming had been a key part of CSK’s successful run over the years, but the franchise has now opted for a change in its coaching setup ahead of the 2027 season.

Zaheer brings extensive experience from his playing career as a former India fast bowler and has also worked in coaching and team management roles in franchise cricket.

His appointment comes as CSK look to rebuild after a difficult run in recent IPL seasons.

CSK Finished Eighth in IPL 2026

CSK last won the IPL in 2023, when the team defeated Gujarat Titans in the final under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Since then, the franchise has been unable to add another title. Dhoni subsequently stepped down as captain, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over the leadership role.

The 2026 season proved difficult for CSK as they finished eighth in the points table after winning six and losing eight of their 14 league matches.

The five-time champions finished with 12 points and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

CSK’s last appearance in the knockout stages came in 2023, when they went on to win the title.

Zaheer Faces New Challenge With CSK

Zaheer’s appointment marks a significant change in CSK’s coaching setup after Fleming’s long tenure.

With the franchise looking to improve its performances and return to the playoffs, Zaheer will take charge ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

His first major task will be to work with the team management and playing group to prepare CSK for the upcoming season.
