Zelensky dials PM Modi’s, seeks support for Ukraine peace efforts

New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday held a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging India to support Kyiv’s peace initiative as the war with Russia enters its fourth year.

The call came at a time when India is facing heightened trade tensions with the United States over its continued purchase of Russian oil.

In a statement, Zelensky said he stressed the importance of India’s participation in resolving the conflict. “It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation. Other formats will not deliver results,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader also renewed calls for sanctions aimed at limiting Russia’s energy exports. “It is necessary to restrict the export of Russian energy, particularly oil, to reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war,” he added.

Zelensky’s remarks come as New Delhi faces a 50 per cent tariff from Washington, imposed by US President Donald Trump, over its Russian oil imports. The White House has accused India of “fuelling the war machine” through continued energy trade with Moscow. Trump recently ordered an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing national security concerns.

Responding to the development, Prime Minister Modi said India’s position on the Ukraine conflict remains consistent — favouring an early, peaceful resolution through dialogue. “India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine,” he posted on X.

On the tariff issue, Modi took a firm stance, declaring that the country would not compromise its core economic priorities. “For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it,” he said.
