    Zila Parishad and Block Samiti Election Results: Counting underway, AAP takes lead

    Counting of votes for the Block Committee and Zila Parishad elections held in Punjab on December 14th is underway today. As of now, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has won 15 out of the 347 District Council seats. AAP is also leading in other constituencies. Similarly, AAP has won 249 out of the total 2838 Block Committee seats. Congress, Akali Dal, and other parties are leading in one seat each.

    As soon as the counting began, a commotion erupted at the counting centre set up at GTV College in Mullanpur Dakha, Ludhiana. Leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress alleged that they were not being allowed inside. A similar situation was witnessed on Nabha Road in Patiala. However, the police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

    Block Committee and Zila Parishad Elections 

    Voting for the Zila Parishad Elections Council and Block Committee elections was held on December 14th, with a 40 per cent voter turnout. Voting was cancelled at 16 booths across 5 districts due to booth capturing and printing-related irregularities. The matter reached the Election Commission, after which re-polling was conducted at these booths on December 16th.

    196 Candidates Elected Unopposed
    Even before the voting, 196 candidates for the Zila Parishad and Block Committee were elected unopposed. This includes 15 candidates for the Zila Parishad. 12 candidates in Tarn Taran and 3 in Amritsar were elected unopposed. Similarly, 181 candidates were elected unopposed for the Block Committee. These include 98 in Tarn Taran, 63 in Amritsar, 17 in Hoshiarpur, 2 in Malerkotla, and 1 in SBS Nagar. All of them are associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
