27-Year-Old Indian National Shot Dead in New York City; Police Hunt Unidentified Shooter

New York: A 27-year-old Indian national was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in New York City following an alleged altercation over a pizza delivery, according to reports.

The victim, Gurdeep Singh, a Sikh immigrant from Punjab’s Kapurthala district, was fatally shot at around 10 p.m. on Friday near Stanley Avenue in the East New York neighbourhood.

Altercation turns fatal in East New York

According to reports, the incident followed an altercation between Singh and another person. A surveillance video reportedly captured two people involved in a physical confrontation, followed by a flash believed to be gunfire.

One person was seen falling to the ground, while the other allegedly got into a car and fled the scene.

Police are investigating the shooting, and no arrests have been reported so far.

Punjabi community expresses grief

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) expressed grief and concern over Singh’s death.

NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said the killing had once again raised concerns over violence against young Punjabi and Sikh community members.

“Every time a young Punjabi or Sikh person is killed, another family is destroyed. We cannot allow repeated violence to become something the community simply learns to live with,” Chahal said in a post on X.

Similar shooting claims Indian-origin victim in Tennessee

The New York shooting comes days after another fatal shooting involving an Indian-origin businessman in Jackson, Tennessee.

According to the Jackson Police Department, officers responded to a robbery and shooting at Ridgecrest Cellars on Ridgecrest Road at around 9 p.m. on August 20.

An unidentified suspect allegedly entered the business, displayed a weapon and demanded cash before shooting the victim.

The victim was identified as Suresh Parsottamdas Patel, a 62-year-old businessman from Gujarat’s Mehsana district, according to reports. Patel had reportedly taken over the store only days before the incident. His 19-year-old daughter was reportedly present when the shooting occurred.

Police said the suspect was described as a Black male wearing a grey hoodie, jeans and black work-style boots, with his face covered by a paintball-style mask. He allegedly fled the scene in a white sedan.

The Jackson Police Department is continuing its investigation and has appealed to anyone with information about the robbery or shooting to come forward.
