Panaji (Goa): Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited Shirgao following a stampede during the Lairai Devi festival that resulted in six fatalities and over 50 injuries. The incident happened early Saturday, around 4-5 AM.

Sawant directed the state authorities to investigate the cause of the tragic event. He mentioned that this was the first stampede in Goa and shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called to inquire about the situation.

Speaking to ANI, Sawant said, “The unfortunate stampede occurred today around 4-5 AM. This is the first such incident in Goa. I have just reached the scene and have visited the injured in various hospitals. Six people have died. I’ve asked the authorities to conduct a detailed investigation. PM Modi also called to check on the situation.”

Maem MLA Premendra Shet explained that the Lairai Devi Jatra was ongoing since Friday. The stampede was triggered by the slippery, sloped area near the temple, which caused devotees to fall and others to be trampled amid the chaos.

He said, “The famous Lairai Zatra has been going on since yesterday. Around 3 AM, in a sloped area, some devotees slipped and fell onto others, causing a stampede. Six people lost their lives. Four bodies are at Mapusa district hospital, and two are at the Community Health Centre. Four injured are in critical condition.”

Both President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic incident that claimed six lives in Shirgao.
