Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the state government is considering making marriage registration mandatory for all social marriages to help prevent child marriages. According to data from 2020 by the Social Education and Social Welfare Department, Tripura ranks third in India for child marriage rates, following West Bengal and Bihar.
Saha explained that to curb child marriages, the government is thinking of introducing pre-marriage registration for social marriages, which will include the mandatory submission of birth certificates. This would help verify the ages of the individuals getting married, as birth certificates will reveal their actual ages. Currently, the law requires girls to be at least 18 years old and boys at least 21 for social marriages.
He called on the public to actively participate in raising awareness and preventing child marriage. Highlighting a recent example, he mentioned a girl from a minority community who was awarded by President Droupadi Murmu for protesting against child marriage, urging others to draw inspiration from her.
Addressing concerns over drug trafficking, Saha also warned that many prominent figures are involved in the illegal trade for financial gain. He made it clear that no one involved in the drug trade would be spared if caught by law enforcement.
