Congress on Monday attacked the state government, terming the murder of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Haryana unit president Nafe Singh Rathi as the state’s “first political murder”. The main opposition party also demanded that the case be investigated either by a High Court judge or by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the supervision of a High Court judge.
Senior Congress leader Raghuveer Singh Kadian said that Rathi’s death is not an ordinary incident. “This is a political murder and the first such incident in Haryana after it became a separate state (in 1966),” Kadian said in the Assembly.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal and many other members also paid tribute to Rathi. Kadian said that Rathi was from a farmer family and became an MLA after a lot of struggle in life. Kadian demanded that the culprits of Rathi’s murder should be arrested and given severe punishment.
The Congress leader said, “The incident should be investigated either by a High Court judge or by the CBI under the supervision of a High Court judge.” He said that he and Rathi belonged to Jhajjar district. The departed INLD leader had great interest in wrestling and other sports.
On Sunday, when Rathi had gone to Bahadurgarh town of Jhajjar adjacent to Delhi in a sports utility vehicle (SUV), car-borne assailants opened fire on him. Due to this, Rathi and an INLD worker died on the spot. Opposition parties reacted sharply to this attack, which took place about two months before the Lok Sabha elections. The opposition alleged deteriorating law and order in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Haryana.
The Chief Minister said that not a single culprit involved in the crime will be spared. He said that the police have been asked to arrest the accused as soon as possible and take strictest action. Senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala accused the BJP-led government of failing to provide security to Rathi despite the threat to his life.
He also demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also targeted the Khattar government over this incident.
