The NIA has said that Thongminthang Haokip alias Thangboi Haokip alias Roger (KNF-MC), the main mastermind of the Manipur violence, was arrested from Imphal airport on June 6. The NIA had registered a case against him under the Indian Penal Code and UA (P) on July 18 last year.

The Kuki and Zomi militant organizations had conspired with other terrorist organizations active in Myanmar and Northeast India with the intention of taking advantage of the current unrest in the region and waging a war against the Government of India.

Haokip has played a key role in attacks on security forces at several places in the state. He has been in touch with Myanmar’s terrorist organization Kuki National Front (KNF)-B. On the other hand, the NIA has revealed the alleged mastermind of the violence that has been going on in Manipur for the last 13 months.

Manipur is still disturbed. Alleged Kuki militants killed Soibam Sharatkumar of Sorok Atingbi Khunou in Jiribam district on Thursday. Jiribam district has remained more or less untouched by the violence that has been going on for more than a year. But this incident has brought the district to a boil. The administration has imposed curfew after the possibility of arson and communal conflict arose.

Jiribam was untouched by violence

Since May 3, 2023, more than 200 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in ethnic conflicts between the Meitei living in the Imphal Valley of Manipur and the Kuki living in the hilly areas. Jiribam, with a diverse ethnic composition including Meitei, Muslim, Naga, Kuki and non-Manipuri, had remained untouched by ethnic conflicts till now.

In March 2023, the Manipur High Court had asked the Central Government to send recommendations to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Caste (ST). After this, the Kuki community started protesting in the hill districts of the state.

On May 3, 2023, violent protests started in Churachandpur district of Manipur. Which soon spread to other districts including East-West Imphal, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi.
