Paris: The decision on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s silver medal may come today. This information was given by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) last Sunday. Earlier it was being said that CAS would give its decision on Saturday at 9:30 am Indian time, but the court had extended its deadline. In the initial information, it was revealed that the decision would be given on August 11, but it was now postponed again till August 13. Earlier today in the morning, Vinesh left from the Olympic Village for India. She will reach India by today.
On August 9, CAS heard the case for 3 hours. During this time Vinesh was also present virtually. Senior advocate Harish Salve presented Vinesh’s side on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Before the final match, Vinesh was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight, while in the weight done before the preliminary round, Vinesh was below the prescribed limit of 50 kg weight category. In such a situation, Vinesh has demanded a joint silver medal.
On this matter, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) said, ‘We are speeding up the process in Vinesh’s case, but it is not possible to give a decision on her appeal in an hour. In this case, it is necessary to hear the side of United World Wrestling first. The decision has to be taken by Dr. Annabel Bennett.’
