The Delhi High Court declined immediate relief to Vinesh Phogat, refusing to exempt her from WFI eligibility criteria for the 2026 World Wrestling Championship selection trials.
A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, which issued a notice on the WFI’s Special Leave Petition (SLP), permitted Phogat to take part in the trials scheduled for May 30 and 31.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has approached the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court order that allowed star wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the upcoming Asian Games.
The development comes a day after the Delhi High Court directed the WFI to allow the Olympian and two-time World Championships medallist to compete in the trials, which are scheduled for May 30 and 31 in New Delhi
The WFI also argued that Phogat could not immediately return to wrestling because athletes are required to complete a six-month notice period after retirement under anti-doping rules.
Senior advocate Rajshekhar Rao, appearing for Phogat, argued before a single-judge Bench of Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav that "there was something more than meets the eye" in the matter and urged the Delhi High Court to permit the wrestler to participate in the trials subject to the outcome of the case.
