A court in Tripura’s North district sentenced two brothers to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor school girl in 2022. The ruling was made by a special Pocso court located in Dharmanagar, which also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each brother, with the stipulation that failure to pay would result in an additional eight months in prison.
The duo was arrested following the filing of an FIR at the Dharmanagar Women Police Station in February 2022. The investigating officer, Usharani Debnath, submitted the charge sheet within two months, and after a two-year trial, the court issued its verdict under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, according to Public Prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma.
The incident occurred when the victim, on her way home from school, visited the brothers’ house for a glass of water. The families of both the victim and the convicts were acquainted, and the victim referred to the convicts’ mother as “grandmother.” The crime took place while the convicts’ mother was away from home, leaving the victim alone with them.
As a result of the assault, the girl became pregnant and later gave birth. Previously, the same special Pocso court sentenced two individuals to death for the rape and murder of a minor girl in June 2019.
