Hyderabad: Key leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were placed under house arrest in Hyderabad on Friday as they prepared to protest against the arrests of their MLAs and other members. Among those detained were Member of Legislative Council K. Kavitha and former minister T. Harish Rao.

The opposition party had organized the protest near the 125-foot statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at the State Secretariat to denounce what they termed the unlawful arrests of their leaders. In response to the planned demonstration, police heightened security measures, deploying personnel outside the homes of prominent leaders to prevent them from participating.

Quthbullapur MLA K.P. Vivekanand and Kukatpally MLA Madharam Krishna Rao were both placed under house arrest in their respective areas. Additionally, in the Dundigal Mandal of the Medchal Malkajgiri district, Shambipur Raju was also detained. Other leaders, including Korutla MLA Sanjay and R.S. Praveen Kumar, faced similar restrictions. Huzurabad MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, arrested the previous day and granted bail shortly thereafter, remained under house arrest.

Police further increased security at the BRS headquarters, Telangana Bhavan, to prevent any rally at the planned protest site. The BRS has accused the Congress government of undemocratic behavior following the arrests of its legislators and public representatives.

Kaushik Reddy was taken into custody on Thursday for allegedly threatening a police officer, having reportedly been booked the day before for making threats against a Station House Officer at the Banjara Hills police station. Several BRS leaders, including former ministers Harish Rao and Jagadish Reddy, were also detained when they attempted to visit Reddy.

Harish Rao has publicly condemned the detentions, questioning the rationale behind the house arrests of party leaders who intended to honor Dr. Ambedkar on his death anniversary. He described the Congress government as imposing an “undeclared emergency” in the state while paradoxically celebrating a year of people’s rule. Rao demanded the immediate release of all detained BRS leaders and workers, criticizing what he called the government’s “dictatorial and autocratic” approach.
