New Delhi: The saree donned by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget speech holds deep cultural significance. It was gifted by Dulari Devi, a celebrated Madhubani painting artist from Bihar and a Padma Shri awardee, whose distinctive style has garnered worldwide acclaim for the region.

The saree, showcasing elaborate fish-themed embroidery and a golden border, honors the rich heritage of Madhubani art and its artisans. Made from Bangalore silk, it features traditional Mithila motifs and was presented to FM Sitharaman during her visit to the Mithila Painting Institute in Saurath on November 29, 2024.

Expressing her pride in the FM wearing her saree, Dulari Devi remarked, “Mithila’s pride is Madhubani paintings. This saree features designs of coupled fish and the lotus, both of which hold great cultural significance in Mithilanchal, known for makhana, fish, and paan. Today, as the Finance Minister wears this saree, we all feel immense pride.”

Dulari Devi highlighted that these motifs are central to Mithila art and embody the region’s traditions and values. The coupled fish, for instance, is a prominent symbol often depicted with the lotus, representing prosperity.

During her visit to the institute, FM Sitharaman showed a keen interest in the symbolism of Mithila art. Dulari Devi recalled a conversation where the FM inquired if she plans her paintings ahead of time, to which Dulari Devi responded, “I just take the brush and start, whatever comes to my mind.”

The Finance Minister also asked about the representations of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita in Mithila art. Dulari Devi explained that Lord Ram is depicted by his bow (Dhanush), while Goddess Sita is symbolized by her makeup (Shringaar), an essential aspect of the paintings.

The saree worn by Sitharaman serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Mithila’s Madhubani art.
