AAP Leader Gurpreet Gopi Shot Dead in Punjab’s Ferozepur, 4 Assailants Flee in Car

Ferozepur (Punjab): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, 45, was shot dead by four armed assailants in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, police said.

The incident took place on Saturday evening in the main bazaar of Mamdot, where Gopi was travelling on a motorcycle with 22-year-old Harpreet Singh alias Happy. According to police, the attackers were travelling in a car and chased the motorcycle before opening fire.

Gopi sustained critical injuries in the firing and was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Harpreet was also injured in the attack and was later referred to a private hospital in Ludhiana for treatment.

Four Armed Assailants Open Fire in Mamdot

According to the police, the four assailants arrived in a car and opened fire at Gopi and Harpreet in the main market area.

Police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused, and raids are being conducted at various locations as part of the investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the attackers had been identified and police teams were working to apprehend them.

The exact circumstances surrounding the attack are being investigated. Police are also examining an old dispute between the two sides, with an election-related dispute emerging as one of the possible angles in the case.

Police Probe Motive Behind AAP Leader’s Killing

The police are examining the sequence of events, including the alleged chase and firing, as part of the investigation.

The incident has also raised fresh concerns over the law and order situation in Punjab, particularly with the state Assembly elections scheduled for next year.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have repeatedly criticised the AAP government over law and order in Punjab.

The BJP has been particularly vocal on the issue ahead of the Assembly polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also criticised the state’s law and order situation during a rally in July.

The AAP government, however, has defended its record, with Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav earlier saying that the state’s crime rate was lower than that of several other states.

The investigation into Gopi’s killing is underway, with police teams working to arrest the accused and establish the motive behind the attack.
