Accurate Assessment of Flood Damage in Punjab

Last year, Punjab faced unprecedented floods due to excessive rainfall. Not only was there heavy loss of life and property, but agriculture also suffered significant damage. Normal life was completely disrupted. The Punjab government had requested a grant of Rs. 60,000 crore from the central government, but received only Rs. 1600 crore.

However, the Punjab government claims that even this Rs. 1600 crore has not yet been received; only an announcement has been made. The response received was that if accurate figures of the flood damage were provided, then appropriate assistance could be given. Now, the Punjab government, with the help of IIT Roorkee, has prepared a report over the past three months. Based on this report, the Punjab government wants compensation from the central government for the losses incurred in different regions of the state. In the July floods, 5 lakh acres of paddy crop in Punjab were destroyed.

Due to the accumulation of sand in the fields, farming is still not possible in some areas. The current estimate is that Punjab has suffered a total loss of Rs. 11,855.65 crore. Along with this, the government has also presented figures for the losses incurred by 14 departments. It was observed that the areas affected by Operation Sindoor suffered even greater damage due to these floods.These unprecedented floods caused significant damage to the infrastructure of the electricity department, the water resources and irrigation department, and the water supply and sanitation department. Roads, hospitals, and schools were damaged. The fisheries department, animal husbandry department, and the forest and environment department also suffered losses. The state government has sought assistance from the central government for their restoration.
