1 Killed, 28 Injured After Passenger Bus Overturns in Afghanistan’s Zabul Province

Kabul: At least one commuter lost his life and 28 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus veered off the road and overturned in southern Afghanistan’s Zabul province on Monday, a local police official said.

Bus overturns after technical malfunction

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Shah Joy district when the bus, travelling from western Herat to the capital Kabul, veered off the road and turned turtle due to a technical malfunction, said Zabihullah Jawhar, spokesperson for the provincial police.

All the victims were swiftly evacuated by police personnel and local residents to nearby medical facilities, where the injured remain under observation and treatment.

Series of fatal road accidents

The latest accident comes weeks after several deadly road mishaps across Afghanistan.

On June 20, at least five commuters were killed and seven others injured after their vehicle overturned in Parwan province. The accident occurred in the Mandiqol area of Kohi Safi district, where the vehicle reportedly veered off the road due to a suspected technical failure, according to provincial police spokesperson Fazul Rahim Muskenyar. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Kabul for treatment.

Earlier, on June 15, four travellers, including a child, lost their lives and four others were injured after a minibus overturned in Wardak province. The accident took place in Saydabad district, killing a mother, her child and two other women at the scene, while four others sustained injuries, some of them in critical condition. Around the same time, another road accident in Kunar province claimed one life and left four others injured.

On May 3, at least three commuters were killed in a high-speed collision between a passenger vehicle and a truck on the outskirts of Andkhoy district in Faryab province, according to the provincial police. Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident.
