Airlines oppose free seat rule, warn of fare hike

Major domestic carriers have strongly objected to the government’s latest directive mandating free seat selection on a majority of flight seats. Airlines say the move interferes with their pricing structure and could disrupt how they manage revenue streams.

 60% seats to be offered without extra charge

The Centre, through aviation authorities, has ordered airlines to make at least 60% of seats available without any additional selection fee. The step is aimed at improving transparency and ensuring fair access for passengers while booking tickets.

Carriers warn of rising ticket prices

Airlines, including major players, argue that removing seat selection charges will hit their ancillary revenue. To offset these losses, they say ticket fares may have to be increased, which could ultimately burden passengers instead of benefiting them.

 Industry calls it a hit on business flexibility

The aviation industry believes such rules limit commercial freedom. According to airline representatives, seat selection fees are a key part of their earnings model, especially in a sector already dealing with high operational costs like fuel and maintenance.

Govt aims to improve passenger experience

The new rule is part of a broader push to make air travel more passenger friendly. Along with free seat allocation, authorities have also stressed that families or passengers on the same booking should be seated together wherever possible.
