Australia: Shooting at Lake Cargelligo kills at least three

Delhi: At least three people were killed in a shooting at Lake Cargelligo in the Australian state of New South Wales on Thursday afternoon.

Two women and a man among the victims

Police said the three people killed included two women and a man. Another man was hospitalized in a serious but stable condition.

Shooting Report and Police Response

New South Wales Police said emergency services received a report of a shooting near Walker Street, Yelkin Street, at approximately 4:40 p.m. local time.

“Officers from the Central West Police District arrived at the scene,” police posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Further shootings a month after Bondi Beach shooting

This shooting comes exactly one month after a father-son duo killed 15 people during the Jewish festival on December 14, 2025, at Bondi Beach. That tragedy shook all of Australia.

National Day of Mourning and Silence

The new shootings occurred on the same day Australia began a national day of mourning for the victims of the Bondi Beach shooting.

Millions of people across Australia were asked to observe a minute’s silence at 7:01 pm (East Coast time) on Thursday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told AFP, “When we see Bondi, it’s not just a beach. It’s part of our commitment to the world. It’s a welcoming place, where there should be room for everyone…but that night, a lot was broken.”

Investigation launched, public advised to stay home

Police said an investigation into the circumstances of the incident has been launched and a crime scene has been established.

Police urged the public to stay away from the area and local residents to stay home. They also sent geo-targeted text messages throughout the city.

“People should stay home at this time…we will use all available resources,” the ABC quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

Criminal still at large

Roy Butler, Independent Member of Parliament for Barwon, said in a Facebook post that the perpetrator has not yet been arrested.

“There have been multiple shootings and the perpetrator has not yet been arrested – please stay home until the advice changes. This information is from the NSW Police Force,” he wrote.

He added, “The situation is dire and ongoing, so we don’t have much more information. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
