New Delhi: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal informed the Lok Sabha that the number of Lok Sabha seats in all states across the country will be increased by 50 percent.
Under this proposal, the total number of Lok Sabha seats could increase from 543 to approximately 815.
This move is said to be related to the process of delimitation and implementing women’s reservation.
Major provision on women’s reservation
According to the government’s plan, approximately 272 of the new seats could be reserved for women.
This proposal is being introduced with the aim of increasing women’s political participation, which is in line with the 33% reservation target.
Change to be implemented after delimitation
This change will be implemented after the delimitation process, which will redistribute seats based on population.
According to government sources, this system is likely to be implemented from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Debate on Political and Federal Balance
Political debate has also intensified regarding this proposal.
Some states have expressed concern that this could increase the imbalance in seats between North and South India. The government, however, maintains that this change is aimed at making democracy more representative.
