Storm Alert in Bihar-UP; 50km Winds, Deaths in Sikkim

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for thunderstorms, lightning and rain across several parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. According to the latest forecast, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km per hour are likely to accompany the storms in several districts of both states.

Meteorologists say the unstable weather is being caused by changing atmospheric conditions and moisture movement across eastern India. Such conditions often trigger sudden thunderstorms, lightning and short bursts of heavy rain, particularly during seasonal transitions.

Authorities have warned residents to remain cautious during storm activity, especially in open areas where lightning strikes and strong winds can pose a serious risk.

Strong Winds and Rain Likely in Several Districts

Weather officials expect thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in multiple districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD forecast indicates that wind speeds could touch 50 km/h, which may uproot trees, damage temporary structures and disrupt traffic.

The department also warned that sudden rain showers and cloudy conditions may occur intermittently during the day. Local administrations have advised residents to stay indoors during severe weather and avoid unnecessary travel.

Farmers in both states have also been urged to secure crops and equipment, as strong winds can cause damage to standing crops and farm infrastructure.

Woman Dies in Storm in Sikkim

Meanwhile, severe weather has already caused a tragic incident in Sikkim, where a 55-year-old woman died after a tree collapsed on her during a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall. The incident occurred in the Rakdong Kafer area when powerful winds uprooted trees in the locality.

Authorities reported that several areas experienced heavy rain, strong winds and hailstorms, which disrupted normal life and damaged trees and infrastructure. In a separate incident, three people were injured when a tree fell on a vehicle during the storm.

Local officials have urged residents to remain alert as unstable weather conditions may continue in parts of the northeastern state.

Tornado in Odisha Leaves Trail of Damage

Eastern India also witnessed extreme weather in Odisha, where a powerful tornado struck parts of Mayurbhanj district. The storm damaged dozens of houses and uprooted trees, causing panic among residents.

Reports indicate that strong winds ripped off roofs of several mud houses and damaged property in affected villages. Emergency teams and local authorities are assessing the extent of the destruction and assisting affected families.

    Weather Pattern Behind the Storms

Experts say that these storms are similar to seasonal β€œNor’wester” type thunderstorms, which frequently occur in eastern and northeastern parts of India. These storms typically bring sudden dark clouds, strong winds and heavy rainfall within a short period.

The interaction of warm surface air with cooler upper-level winds creates instability in the atmosphere, triggering intense thunderstorm systems across eastern states.

    Advisory Issued for Public Safety

Authorities have issued precautionary guidelines to minimize risks during the severe weather conditions:

    • Avoid standing under trees during thunderstorms.

    • Stay indoors when lightning or strong winds occur.

    • Secure loose outdoor items that could be blown away.

    • Farmers should protect crops and livestock from sudden storms.

Weather officials are continuously monitoring the situation and advising residents in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and nearby regions to stay updated with official forecasts and alerts.

Meteorologists expect intermittent thunderstorms and rain activity to continue in eastern India over the next few days as the weather system remains active.
